Are there Genetically Modified Crops or Animals in Australia?

·

Most Genetically Modified crops and animals are not yet legal in Australia. Whole foods in particular are still illegal, however genetically modified ingredients are accepted. These have to undergo a safety evaluations and the genes are usually modified in the early stages of the food chain. Some examples of genetically modified food legal is Australia are:

  • Herbicide resistant soybeans are used, but not grown in Australia so that farmers can spray weeds without harming their crops

  • Major pest resistant cotton is grown and sold in Australia for cloth and cotton seed oil. Due to their inbuilt resistance to major pests, farmers are able to reduce pesticide sprays.
