What are the benefits to genetically modified food?

There are many risks in regard to genetically modified food, however there are some considerable benefits to the procedure that may outweigh the risks at times. These benefits are stated below:

May Solve World Hunger
Scientists have the capabilities to insert genes into rice in order to boost levels of Vitamin A, or insert genes that boost protein into potatoes. This will allow developing countries to obtain higher quality staples to supplement their nutrient deficiencies due to the world hunger crisis. There is however, always the question of whether these developing counties will be able to afford this genetically modified food.

May Produce Tastier, Nutrient Rich Food for Communities
The gene technology has the potential to produce food that is of a much higher quality then what is currently available. This food would not only taste better, but also provide the nutrients lacking in many individuals diets. In addition to this, the resistance of crops to certain climates and especially insects, would also allow the crops to be sprayed with a reduced about of insecticide and herbicide, benefiting not only our health, but also the environment.

May Be a Cure for Food Allergies
In most food allergy cases, the cause of the allergy (e.g. wheat and milk) is a specific gene within the organism. Therefore, through isolating this gene and either switching or deleting it, scientists may be able to develop food that is without the allergy causing characteristics. Thousands of individuals would then be able to eat the foods they were previously allergic to, hence ensuring they receive all the necessary nutrients for a human diet.

These are considerable benefits, however it is personal preference therefore as a parent, you must inform yourself of all the risks and possible long-term effects and decide on whether the benefits surpass all of this.
